Weight Loss Resistance And
Metabolic Health

Weight and weight loss resistance are closely related to metabolic health. By good care of metabolic health you can fairly keep your weight at healthy level for a longer period of time. On the other hand abdominal obesity associated with resistance to weight loss is often accompanied by a condition named metabolic syndrome, a multifaceted condition consisting of diabetes type 2, abdominal obesity, hypertension, increased serum lipids, increased inflammation and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. These combinations of health problems increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, heart failure and stroke.

How Naturopathy can help to omtimize wieght and metabolism?

Weight loss resistance and metabolic imbalance are closely inter-related, so by taking a good care of metabolic health you can fairly keep your weight at healthy level for a longer period of time. On the other hand,  Obesity is a leading preventable cause of cardiometabolic diseases and mortality. Body mass index (BMI) is a scale to measure your body mass and is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in square meters. Ideal BMI is 18.5 to 24.9. However, Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) more than or equal to 30. Abdominal obesity is often associated with a condition named metabolic syndrome, including issues such as diabetes type 2, increased blood pressure, increased serum lipids, increased inflammation, non-alcoholic liver disease. These combinations of health problems increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, heart failure and stroke. Therefore, paying attention to weight management is crucial in reducing probability of these health risks.

What are the main issues in metabolic syndrome?

You may have one or more of these features.

  • Insulin resistance

  • Abdominal obesity

  • Elevated blood sugar level.

  • Hypertension

  • Elevated serum triglyceride.

  • Elevated serum LDL cholesterol level

  • Reduced serum HDL (high-density lipoprotein) (HDL) cholesterol.

What is Insulin Resistance?

Insulin resistance is one of the leading cause of diabetes type 2. Insulin resistance happens when your muscle, liver cells and fat cells do not respond properly to the given concentration of insulin. Insulin is a hormone, secreted by your pancreas that helps your cells to uptake glucose from the blood and use it for making energy. Therefore, in case of insulin resistance, the cells can’t uptake glucose from your blood effectively to make energy from it. To compensate for this cellular weakness, your pancreas makes more insulin to defeat your escalating blood glucose levels. The result is increased serum insulin that we call hyperinsulinemia. Through time your pancreas loses its capacity to make this huge amount of insulin and as a result your blood sugar start increasing. Eventually this vicious cycle ends up to prediabetic and diabetic state for you.

What is Cholesterol and how to?

Cholesterol is a steroid molecule which occurs naturally in your body. 80% of the cholesterol in your body is produced by your body and mainly in your liver. Cholesterol has four essential functions among many.

  1. Produce hormones like oestrogen, testosterone and adrenaline.

  2. Produce vitamin D.

  3. Produce bile acids, which help the body digest fat and absorb fat-soluble vitamins in the small intestine.

  4. Produce brain neurotransmitters.

Therefore, it is obvious that presence of cholesterol is vital for your living life. After production, cholesterol moves from your liver through blood, to the cells and at the end it returns to your liver. Along the way, cells pick up the cholesterol for their functions and their source of energy production.

There are two types of cholesterol in your body:

  • Low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, namely ‘bad’ cholesterol, because of its potential damage to the vessel walls and atherosclerosis as a result. However, job of LDL is delivering cholesterol to cells to be used in cell wall and steroid production.

  • High density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, namely ‘good’ cholesterol as its job is picking up the LDL from the blood and returning it to the liver.

As I mentioned before presence of cholesterol both LDL and HDL is vital for your living life. The important point is the balance between ratio of these two types of cholesterol in your blood. Stress with its oxidative changes, high blood sugar with its glycation effect, bad dietary habits, irregular sleep pattern and lack of anti oxidant in your food are the main factors affecting negativly the healthy balance between HDL and LDL cholesterol.
