Meet Dr. Manesh, ND

A medical background. A naturopathic approach. A different way of looking at the whole picture.

I am Dr. Masoumeh Shayesteh Manesh, ND, MD (IMG).

I am a Registered Naturopathic Doctor in Ontario, practising in Toronto.

My professional journey began with medical education and clinical practice. I earned my Medical Doctorate from Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Iran and spent more than three decades practising medicine before continuing my education in naturopathic medicine at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto. I am registered with College of Naturopaths of Ontario now.

Becoming a naturopathic doctor did not mean leaving my medical background behind.

It gave me another framework through which to understand health. Today, my clinical thinking is informed by both my medical background and my training in naturopathic medicine.

How I Think About Complex Health Concerns

One of the things I value most in clinical practice is pattern recognition. When symptoms don't seem connected, there is usually a pattern worth exploring. That does not mean that every collection of symptoms has one hidden cause. It means that I do not want to look at each symptom in isolation when the clinical picture suggests that several factors may be interacting.  Changes in metabolism, digestion, hormones, sleep, nutrition and daily habits can sometimes intersect in ways that are not immediately obvious from looking at one symptom alone.

My role is to step back, look at the larger picture, determine what information is relevant, and decide what needs further investigation and what can reasonably be addressed through naturopathic care. This way of thinking is central to my practice.

My Approach to Naturopathic Medicine

I do not believe that every health concern can be explained by one cause, one laboratory test or one treatment.

My approach begins with understanding the individual. Depending on the reason for the visit, assessment may include a detailed health history, physical examination when appropriate, review of existing medical investigations, laboratory testing if required and within the scope of naturopathic practice, and discussion of nutrition, lifestyle

and other naturopathic approaches.

I use the information available to develop an individualized clinical plan. I also believe that responsible naturopathic practice includes recognizing when another healthcare professional, conventional medical investigation, or coordinated care is appropriate.

I deeply believe that naturopathic medicine and conventional medicine do not have to be treated as competing systems and for some patients, the most appropriate care involves working alongside other healthcare  professionals.

Areas of Interest in My Practice

My clinical interests have developed around health concerns in which several physiological and lifestyle factors may be relevant.

These include:

  • Metabolic Health: Difficulty changing weight, insulin resistance, metabolic health and related nutritional and lifestyle factors.

  • Thyroid & Hormonal Health:Thyroid concerns, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, menstrual and hormonal concerns, PCOS and changes associated with perimenopause.

  • Skin & Acne: Adult acne, adolescent acne and other skin concerns where nutrition, hormones, metabolism, digestion and lifestyle may be relevant to the clinical picture.

  • Digestive & Gut Health: Digestive symptoms, bowel concerns, constipation, IBS and assessment of factors that may influence gastrointestinal health.

  • Energy & Fatigue: Persistent fatigue, fluctuations in energy, afternoon energy crashes and the broader factors that may contribute to these experiences.

  • Women's Health: Menstrual health, PCOS, hormonal changes, perimenopause and related naturopathic care.

  • Healthy Aging: Supporting health and function over time through individualized attention to nutrition, lifestyle and other appropriate naturopathic approaches.

What Can You Expect From a Visit?

A naturopathic consultation is not simply a list of symptoms followed by a list of supplements. I want to understand the story behind the symptoms. That includes asking questions that may not have been explored previously, reviewing relevant medical information, identifying relationships among different aspects of your health, and determining which findings actually matter.

Sometimes the next step is further investigation.

Sometimes the most useful step is to reconsider what has already been tried.

Sometimes several relatively small factors need to be addressed together.

And sometimes the appropriate next step is referral or collaboration with another healthcare professional.

The purpose of the visit is to bring greater clarity to the clinical picture and determine a reasonable path forward.

My Clinical Philosophy

After many years in healthcare, I have learned that good clinical care requires both curiosity and restraint.

Curiosity means being willing to ask why several things are happening together.

Restraint means not assuming that every symptom has the same explanation, ordering unnecessary testing, or promising an outcome before the clinical picture is understood.

I believe patients deserve explanations that make sense, recommendations that have a reason behind them, and care that respects the limits of what we actually know. That is how I approach naturopathic medicine.

My Mission

My mission is to practise naturopathic medicine with clinical curiosity, medical perspective and respect for the individual patient.

I want to help people understand their health concerns more clearly and identify what can reasonably be addressed.

For me, naturopathic medicine is not about replacing one medical system with another. It is about bringing another perspective to patient care. A way of practice that considers the individual as a whole while remaining grounded in clinical reasoning, appropriate investigation and responsible practice.

If Your Health Concerns Don't Seem Connected

Sometimes the most useful starting point is simply to step back and look at the whole picture.

If you have been trying to understand several ongoing health concerns and are looking for a naturopathic approach that considers the connections among them, a consultation can begin with understanding your individual history and clinical picture.
