How Does PCOS Happen?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a the most common endocrine imbalance in the childbearing age of women al around the world. In this condition your body experiences an imbalance in hormones, towards excess of "male" hormones AKA “androgens”. Alongside there is a problem with proper secretion and function of insulin leading to insulin resistance.

So, the circle of events is like this:

-
Hormone Imbalance: Your ovaries produce higher-than-normal levels of male hormones “androgens” which leads to ovulation problem.
-
Disrupted Ovulation: The high secretion of androgen interferes with your normal ovulation and period.
-
Anovulation: Ovaries cannot release a mature egg each month ( No-ovulation!).
-
Follicle Buildup: Instead of the eggs become mature and being released from ovaries, they stay in the immature small follicles, and accumulate as many small, cystic sacs inside of the ovaries. It gives the ovaries appearance of multiple small cysts in ultrasound that is called “polycystic". However, now we know not every woman with PCOS have these cysts.
-
Insulin Resistance: This is a vicious cycle between insulin and excess androgen which happens alongside and make the situation worse. Lots of women with PCOS have insulin resistance, It means that at the cellular level they are not responding enough to insulin to, manage blood sugar properly. So, body makes more insulin to compensate, and this excess insulin leads to further excess androgen production, and this creates a vicious cycle of worsening the condition and ending up to weight gain and increased blood sugar.
PCOS is a multifactorial hormonal condition affecting your ovaries and your period rhythm, mood and fertility. As the name implies, ovaries may develop multiple cysts, so the name Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) comes out of this primary impression of the disease. However, now we know that you may still have PCOS even though you do not show any cysts on your ovaries and not present in ultrasound.

What are Signs & Symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome?

-
Irregular menses: Irregular menses is another annoying symptom of PCOS which comes as infrequent cycles or no period at all and most of the time with pain, PMS and heavy bleeding after few months of no period.
-
Insulin Resistance: Another problem is Insulin resistance which has a multilayer impact on the course of Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome from initiation to development. The malfunctions of these two hormonal systems are interconnected in many different levels. This is one of the most important reasons that PCOS Naturopathic Plan can make a difference in the outcome of a huge disease named PCOS and may improve the outcome by guided lifestyle adjustment based on the unique context of an individual’s life in addition to timely nutritional recommendations. This is a teamwork with an extremely joyful result.
-
Weight gain: Weight gain and weight-loss resistance is another vicious cycle present in PCOS. No matter how long or haw hard you try, the weight is resistant to come down, because your metabolism is affected deeply by your insulin hormone dysregulation and androgen excess.
-
Skin health and Beauty problems: Hormonal dysregulation whether primary or secondary to other conditions, has an impact on the appearance and beauty of the skin. It comes as acne, hair loss and unwanted hair, Skin Tags and more. Acne, unwanted hair (on your face, body or both) hair loss, thinning hair and dark area on skin (Acanthosis nigricans) are outcomes of increased circulating androgen in your body. During these decades of practice, I ‘ve seen on a daily basis devastation of young women with PCOS due to the change in their appearance because of acne and acne scars, hair loss, facial pigmentation and unwanted hair. These presentations affect their self esteem and negatively impacts their professional interactions and success.
-
Low Mood and Self esteem: On top of everything, is the way that a woman see herself in the context of her life. She needs a happy and healthy environment to be fertile and get pregnant. PCOS considering its widespread hormone disruption state, may lead to low self esteem and depression which by itself may interfere with her fertility success. PCOS profoundly disrupts women’s lives at many levels. The result is a global disorder for a woman physically and mentally and emotionally. That’s why hopelessness, anxiety, depression and mood disorders are common among women with PCOS.
